Eyemoo RLCD NXT EPaper S1 Tablet Test and Review

Introduction

Eyemoo is a new innovative brand in the world of RLCD.

They are very soon releasing their first product, the NXT EPaper S1, a 10″ RLCD color tablet with a front light on Kickstarter.

We already know some RLCD products and it looks like at least one new is coming every year! This is very exciting for everyone that want an alternative to regular LCD eyes burning screen.

This device is the third RLCD tablet release to the public:

  1. Hisense Q5
  2. TCL NXT Paper S8
  3. Eyemoo NXT EPaper S1

Specifications

The specs of this Reflective LCD tablet will blow every other one made.

The screen have a 1600*1200 pixels resolution. That mean about 200 DPI which is very good. For example the SVD RLCD Monitor have only 69 DPI, 143 DPI for the Hisense Q5 and 206 DPI for the Dasung 13.3″ HD-F.

Not only the resolution is very good but it also have color unlike the Hisense Q5 which is monochrome. The screen integrate a front light which is very unheard of beside the Azumo showcase RLCD tablet. Maybe they are using their tech?

Using Android 12 and Google Mobile Service which means that you use your google account, and download paid app. This is a great plus, as on the Hisense Q5 it doesn’t have GMS, so I couldn’t use the very good SuperDisplay app to use it as a monitor.

I won’t go in too much detail about the specs since the most interesting thing for us here, is the screen and our eyes.

Launch date

This tablet is supposed to be able to be order on Kickstarter in March.

The kickstarter has launch! You can check it here

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1933467193/worlds-first-60hz-color-rlcd-epaper-with-front-light

They shipped the tablet this week! and I receive it the 25 July.

It was supposed to be ship in June, so only one month late.

For those who missed the kickstarter, they made an indiegogo:

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/world-s-first-color-rlcd-epaper-with-front-light

Price

I bought the tablet for 358.89€ and paid 91.50€ of customs fees (I’m in France).

People can think it is expensive, but for a color RLCD tablet with frontlight (the only one that exist) I think its a decent price.

Packaging

The tablet is well package and it won’t have any damage during the transport.

Inside there is the Eymoo branded box inside the box. Simple and effective!

Unfortunately we can see on the last picture tiny shining “star” on the display.
Other people have the same problem on the kickstarter comment section.

I’m not sure it’s dead pixel. I think it is some kind of dust/foreign object trap inside the front glass layer, because it feels very on top and not deeper, in the LCD panel.

It is sad that it wasn’t detected at the Quality Control / still ship to the customer. I don’t think that Eyemoo will cover that, but I will email them to be sure.

First look

I immediately took out my Hisense Q5 to compare both display:

The NXT Epaper have less big bezel than the Q5, it also feels better quality.

For the screen, because it’s the main selling advantage of this tablet: the Hisense Q5 is better, it has better contrast, better brightness, way less glare. On the other hand the NXT Epaper have better resolution and color which are very nice to have.

NXT Epaper feels really close to the SVD 32″ monitor. I don’t have the SVD anymore but I think that the tablet have stronger glare than SVD. Like the SVD it struggle to get light and evenly across the screen unlike the Q5 which is super good for that. I guess that maybe the fact of not having a color polarizing filter help with that?

I also tried my little light that worked perfect for the Q5, but not here, like the SVD it need really strong light, and even with strong light it’s hard to have it spread evenly.

This review is in progress and I will complete it in the next few weeks.

Some news pictures made with frontlight off.

Hello, I’m the Eyemoo S1 and the Nxtpaper s8. Last one IS far better than Eyemoo.
Better contraste, not glare, it lacks front like, but the front like in the Eyemoo is placed on one side, thats IS not very good.

      Salut,

Hi, when you mention “358.89€ and paid 91.50€ for customs” was that included in the checkout cart, or did you have to pay customs separately ?

I noticed that price got down to ~190EUR+44EUR shipping (I am also located in France), and I am trying to understand if that includes custom fees or not.

I had to pay customs separately.
Expect usually + 20% on product and shipping price (VAT) + a flat fee from the carrier, usually about 30€

    Thank you for the reply!

I just noticed the Hannspree Hannsnote has dropped in price to 200EUR too, so now I am a bit hesitant between:
    – Eyemoo S1: ~270EUR new (including shipping and customs)
    – Hannsnote2: ~200EUR new (EU shop)
    – Boox Note Air 3c: ~250EUR used

I have the ambition to replace my laptop for random browsing, and maybe some quick coding using codespaces ( https://www.reddit.com/r/eink/comments/1gv9ued/vscode_on_boox_max_3/ ), do you think it is feasible with Hannsnote2 indoor ?

I find the Boox Note Max 3 too limited due to lack of color and mouse latency (I can use touch screen for most things, but at some point I still need a mouse).

      Honestly I don’t know.

Never tried boox, but only Dasung. Quality is lower than a kindle (because it need to be fast), so it’s less pleasant to the eyes.
You also get ghosting, I guess it’s same for boox

Hannotes2 if you don’t have enough light you will see nothing, and it means that you can only work during a bright day unless you setup a lighting system.

Eyemoo, the screen is very glossy and you need (I find) even more light than hannsnote unless you use the frontlight (which is not perfect and only on one side, so not uniform across the screen)

Also I bought those device to use it firstly as a monitor, but in the end for me 10″ is very too small.
If you want more opinion I suggest creating a post on reddit /eink/ or /ReflectiveLCD/.

    Thank you for your replies.
I suppose that means i might not buy any. I also have started looking for a monitor, but in the end even the 13 inch boox max 3 is kind of small for coding, and the lack of color cues really slows me down.

So at the moment i was rather looking for a tablet to replace my old kindle fire that could occasionally allow me to reply mails browse internet watch videos… the kind of things i today i have now switching to a laptop because kindle fire is too slow and/or unsupported.

FIY i have bought a pair of gunnar gaming glasses and a blue light filter that i applied to my laptop screen and they both improved significantly my eyestrain feeling.
However the laptop filter reduces visibility well lit environment.

I am wondering if the TCL napper could somewhat compare to those filters, but it is really hard to engage on it without physically seeing the devices.

For monitor, boox and Dasung make 25″ one, with and without frontlight, color and black and white.
For RLCD you have the sun vision display that now make a 24″ with frontlight (very few reviews though)
Eazeye also make his 2.0 24″ RLCD with no frontlight.
Hannspree should make monitor but we are still waiting for those.

Yes you can play with glasses. I already tried the gunnar. There is also fl41 theraspecs, avulux … to name a few.
You can also maybe tried to be tested for Irlen/visual stress syndrome.
You can also buy a pack of irlen / cerium overlays and put it on the screen, see if it helps.

There is many things to try, not that it will necessarily help, but you never know. But each things are expensive to test unfortunately.
